A DOWNTOWN TRAGEDY

Smyrna is mourning this morning after a devastating fire broke out late Sunday night at the Concord Crossing Apartments on Old Concord Road. What began as a quiet Sunday evening ended in an "accidental" tragedy that has claimed three lives and left dozens of our neighbors without a home.

Cobb Fire crews arrived on the scene at the 500 block of Woodsong Way shortly after 10 p.m. to find flames engulfing the second floor and threatening to swallow the third. Despite immediate rescue efforts that pulled six people from the building, three individuals tragically did not survive.

The Impact by the Numbers:

  • Life Loss: 3 unidentified neighbors killed.

  • Displacement: 30 people currently without a home.

  • Structural Damage: 8 units "heavily damaged"; 24 units declared "uninhabitable."

  • Cause: Preliminary reports from the Fire Investigations Unit suggest the fire was accidental, though the investigation is ongoing.

The Steward’s Response: How to Help

When a disaster of this scale hits Smyrna, the "system" of community care kicks into gear. The American Red Cross (Greater Atlanta Chapter) is already on-site providing comfort kits and recovery planning for the 20+ residents impacted.

As Stewards, our responsibility now is support. Many of these families left their homes with nothing but what they could carry in laundry baskets and backpacks.

How You Can Help:

  • Donate: Support the American Red Cross - Greater Atlanta to fund the direct client assistance currently being provided to Concord Crossing residents.

  • Be Vigilant: The Fire Dept noted this appears accidental. Check your smoke detector batteries today—a 5-minute task is the simplest form of home stewardship.

🚧 SOUTH COBB DRIVE IS GETTING AN OVERHAUL

If you drive the stretch of South Cobb Drive between Concord and Windy Hill, you already know the headache. Now, the city and GDOT are finally moving forward with a major improvement project.

The Vibe Check: Nobody likes road construction, but everyone hates the current traffic flow. GDOT is hosting a Public Information Open House on March 19 (4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Community Center) to reveal exactly what they are doing to the corridor. If you commute this route, you need to see these plans before the cones go up.

🏓 THE PICKLEBALL TAKEOVER CONTINUES

Mableton just landed a massive new indoor recreation option. Pickleball Kingdom officially opened its doors at Brookwood Square (Austell Rd & the East-West Connector).

Why it matters: The demand for courts in South Cobb has severely outpaced the supply. This new facility gives locals a dedicated, climate-controlled space to play without fighting for park space. Mayor Michael Owens was already on-site to hit the inaugural first serve.

🚒 A GALA WITH ACTUALLY GOOD FOOD

Fundraiser dinners are notorious for rubbery chicken and stale rolls. The Smyrna Public Safety Foundation is changing the math for their upcoming "Hero Dinner Gala" on March 5 at Boxwood Social Hall.

The Draw:
They’ve tapped Smyrna’s culinary heavyweights to cater the event. Food is being provided by Atkins Park, Zucca Bar & Pizzeria, Good Kitchen + Market, and Muss & Turner's, with drinks by StillFire Brewing. It’s a chance to support local first responders while eating the best food in the city.

Is Smyrna a "Walking City" or a "Driving City"?

That is the $64,000 question currently brewing at City Hall.

The latest debate centers on a proposed ordinance that would tighten the belt on new drive-thrus in the downtown area—specifically focusing on banks. On one side, you have the vision of the 2026 Downtown Redevelopment Plan, which imagines a walkable "Jonquil Mile" filled with food halls, greenways, and foot traffic. On the other, you have the reality of modern life: people like their cars.

The Core Conflict:

  • The "Walkable" Vision: Mayor Derek Norton and the Council are pushing for a downtown that looks more like a destination and less like a series of parking lots. By restricting drive-thrus, the city forces buildings to "engage the street," creating a more vibrant, European-style atmosphere.

  • The "Convenience" Reality: Critics of the ban point out that for many—especially parents with kids in the back or seniors with mobility issues—the drive-thru bank teller is a lifeline, not an eyesore.

The Steward’s Perspective:

This is a battle over Infrastructure Identity. Every time we approve a drive-thru, we are prioritizing the "Flow of Traffic" over the "Flow of People." However, when we ban them entirely, we risk making our downtown a "Boutique Bubble" that’s hard for regular, busy families to navigate.

The Big Question: Can we have a world-class walkable downtown that still respects the car-centric reality of suburban Georgia? Or is it time to pick a side?
